Exploring India

Exploring India

Our India specialist shares her know-how on the South Asian giant

Despite its sheer size and immense potential as a tourist destination, until recently India had seen relatively low numbers of visitors. Aside from Goa, which people have flocked to since the 1960s, much of the Indian sub-continent remains relatively unexplored. However, as India is now the second fastest-growing economy in the world, more money is being diverted into improving accommodation and transport links and promoting destinations. As a result, people are seeing what is on offer – from ancient temples and royal cities to isolated beaches and mountain retreats. Our resident India expert, Elspeth Huntley, provides her recommendations on some of the best places to visit.

What are the most essential sights?

Rajasthan, in the northwest, is one of the most popular destinations, with one in three tourists who visit India coming here. Known as the Land of Princes, not only are there ancient forts, palaces and havelis (private mansions) but it is also home to the Aravallis – one of the oldest mountain ranges – and the barren Thar Desert. A popular trip in Rajasthan is the Golden Triangle, so called due to the wealth of history and culture along the way. Beginning in Delhi, it veers south to the Taj Mahal in Agra, and then west to Rajasthan's state capital, Jaipur, known as the Pink City. A visit to the 300-year-old observatory and the impressive 18th-century City Palace here should be on any itinerary. Rajasthan also has a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets. For a bit of luxury, stay at the five-star, art deco Umaid Bhawan resort in Jodhpur.

How about less visited destinations?

Although not as well travelled as Rajasthan, the southern state of Karnataka is slowly gaining in popularity. The main airport in Bengaluru (former Bangalore) can be reached easily from the UK. The city itself is a thriving place, mainly as a result of its booming IT industry. Karnataka also produces 90% of India’s gold, almost 60% of its coffee and a significant amount of raw silk. With the rupee at an all time high, there has never been a better time to go shopping. All the luxury brands, from Audemars Piguet to De Beers, have opened shops here – and prices are some of the most competitive in the world.

Where next for spectacular and historic sights?

Head out of Bengaluru and find some of the beautiful scenery that India is famed for. You can go trekking in the cool highlands of Kodagu – on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats – along paths worn down by migrating elephants. Then there is the UNESCO World Heritage site at Hampi. Although quite arduous to get to by road, helicopters can be hired to travel there and give access to incredible views of the boulder-strewn landscape on the way. However, the highlight has to be the royal city of Mysore – home to a spectacular palace, 12th-century Hoysala temples and atmospheric markets.

What about soaking up some nature away from the hustle?

For those wanting to escape the crowds and switch off, the remote Lakshadweep Islands are ideal. This archipelago of 36 coral isles is located 150 miles off the coast of Kerala, in the Arabian Sea. Surrounded by reefs and clear blue waters, it’s a fantastic spot for scuba diving or simply kicking back in a hammock with a good book. To maintain the ecology, tourists require an entry permit to visit – our dedicated travel team can source one on your behalf.

And for some pampering of the body and soul?

Another emerging trend with those visiting India is for spa and yoga tours. Located in the northeast of India and not as affluent as its neighbouring states, Bihar is famous for being the birthplace of Buddhism. Siddhartha Gautama – Buddha – spent much of his life here and gained enlightenment under a bodhi tree in Bodhgaya. This is now one of the most significant Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world. However, for those wanting to meditate in style, the luxurious Ananda Spa, set in the foothills of the Himalayas in nearby Uttarakhand, is a highly recommended option, offering yoga and Ayurvedic treatments.
